Practice Description
Valerie Young has been in the private practice of psychotherapy for 25 years. One of her areas of expertise is helping people who have recently relocated. She also specializes in working with anxiety, stress, depression, and with people who wish to clarify meaning and value in their lives. Another area of expertise is her work with couples who have intimacy and relationship issues.
For 10 years Dr. Young was the director of counseling at Kara, an agency in Palo Alto, California, where she trained and supervised over 600 counselors in working with the chronically or acutely ill, as well as with those in grief. Her book on this subject, published by International Dialogue Press, was an outgrowth of her interest in this field.
This interest has led her to one of her other specializations: working with people who have a chronic or life-threatening illness. This includes people who have a broad range of health problems such as cancer, chronic illness, coping with the poor health of a family member, sudden accident or grief, age-related memory loss and adult-onset hearing loss.
A warm, compassionate woman, she has an intuitive grasp of how best to get inside the experience of her clients and help them move toward resolution of their situations. In spite of the challenges inherent in working on these issues, it often happens that during a crisis people have a unique opportunity to see clearly what really matters in their lives.
Dr. Young brings to her clients a vast experience in helping patients and caregivers work more effectively with the medical profession. One of her current activities is teaching medical residents at Duke University.
