Practice Description

The focus of my practice is in Medical Family Therapy. I assist individuals, families, and extended families adjust to the emotional, physical, and psychological changes which can result from medical problems. I have a special interest in families dealing with genetic issues-whether they are adjusting to a genetic diagnosis, deciding to be tested, or disclosing information to other family members. Another focus area is with clients coping with autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus and fibromyalgia. Some common problems include role changes, intimacy issues, body image changes, and depression related to a medical diagnosis. I also assist individuals having emotional or psychological difficulty with medical procedures, treatment decisions, and compliance issues. Medical challenges are viewed as impacting the patient as well as the entire family. The goal of therapy is to improve adjustment by identifying a family's strengths, and by understanding the meaning of the illness within the context of medical, family, social, and multigenerational systems. I also have a general practice in Marriage and Family Therapy.
