Practice Description
I seek to help people improve their relationships with significant others and with themselves. I take a realistic, optimistic approach to help clients create the changes they want in their lives.
Particular areas of emphasis in my practice include working with adult individual clients, couples, families, pre-marital counseling, working with families having difficulties with their children or adolescents, men's and women's issues, self-care, and sexual issues.
I enjoy training therapists around the world in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples and families, developed by Dr. Sue Johnson. E.F.T. is recognized by the A.P.A. as an empirically-validated approach to helping couples in distress. This model has 17 outcome studies showing effectiveness, second to none in the couples therapy field.
Therapy is from a strength-based perspective that is affirming, and culturally honoring for persons and families from all walks of life. I welcome couples and families from all faiths, cultures, ethnicity, backgrounds, and sexual orientation. 12 Step work is also supported in this practice, and I seek to connect with the best and highest good in each person, following your lead for what you want from therapy or coaching.
I also enjoy working with individual adults wanting to address old emotional wounds, address anxiety, depression or tackle other problems that keep them from enjoying their lives in the present.
In couples and family therapy, my work is grounded in the central importance of connection and emotional availability within the family. My work is congruent with the new science of love which shows that we are wired to be connected. In particular, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) developed by Sue Johnson. Her book, Hold Me Tight, is a resource that couples find very beneficial and supportive of our work together. EFT is a well researched approach that moves 70 to 75% of distressed couples to happy, and 90% of couples report positive, significant changes. Of course, every couple and family is unique and first and foremost I want our working relationship to be a collaborative one that is supportive of your needs and based on your goals and values.
In addition to providing direct services to individuals, families and couples, I present locally and nationally concerning relationships, raising children and adolescents and the influences of the larger society. I am the Executive Director of the Denver Family Institute which provides low-fee services for families and couples in two locations in the Denver area (
