A family systems therapist is interested in exploring life's challenges within the context of family relationships. One therapeutic goal is to identify the underlying dynamics that result in automatic responses and heightened anxiety that is expressed in physical, emotional, or social symptoms. The therapist's own effort at maintaining objectivity and emotional neutrality offers the individual, family, or couple, the opportunity to explore thoughts and feelings and to recognize their reciprocal contribution in any relationship. Understanding how one functions in a relationship allows options and the possibility that automatic responses can be decreased over time.
