Practice Description
Are you struggling to make sense of your life? Have familiar circumstances and people suddenly changed or lost meaning? Do you find yourself overwhelmed, depressed, or struggling with patterns of substance abuse or addictive behaviors?
Gerald A. Juhnke, Ed.D., LPC, NCC, ACS, CCAS, MAC is a Professor at The University of Texas at San Antonio and Director of UTSA’s Counselor Education and Supervision Doctoral Program. He has been a counselor since 1986. Although Dr. Juhnke is an expert in family and addictions counseling, his practice is more general in nature. His clients present varying concerns such as depression, infidelity, career, and relationship distress.
Dr. Juhnke’s clients are highly functioning persons who have encountered some unexpected life bumps. Sometimes these bumps result from relationship, economic or career changes. At other times the bumps come from questioning one’s current life circumstances, direction, and relationships. No matter your presenting concerns, Dr. Juhnke wants to help you identify your best course of action and implement changes you believe will improve your life satisfaction levels.
With over 20 years of clinical experience, there are few client concerns that Dr. Juhnke has not encountered. However, no one is an expert in every area. Thus, Dr. Juhnke encourages persons encountering eating or sexual disorders to seek other treatment experts.
In addition to being a caring, compassionate, and effective counselor, Dr. Juhnke is a noted academic, researcher, and scholar. He has authored or edited five counseling books specific to addicted families, addictions, and suicide, as well as more than 40 refereed journal articles. The overwhelming majority of the books and articles he has authored were written for counselors. They describe how counselors can increase their clinical effectiveness. Isn’t that the type of expert you want facilitating your treatment?
As a practicing counselor, academic, researcher, and scholar he was elected to two national counseling presidencies and is the past president of both The International Association for Addictions and Offender Counselors and The Association for Assessment in Counseling. Additionally, Dr. Juhnke is a former Editor of The Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling. Dr. Juhnke has been the recipient of numerous counseling awards including the 2009 American Counseling Association Fellow Award, the 2008 International Association for Addictions and Offender Counseling (IAAOC) Addictions/Offender Educator Excellence Award, the IAAOC Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling Research Award, and the American Counseling Association’s Ralph F. Berdie Research Award.
