My area of emphasis in my practice is focused on working with adolescents and young adults between the ages of sixteen to twenty seven years of age.
These young individuals have been given a diagnosis of severe and persistent mental illness and in almost all instances have one of their parents or legal guardian functioning as their representative payee of their Supplemental Security Income check. The presenting problem is usually presented by the representative payee, parent or legal guardian stating that the beneficiary is having difficulty with chronic aggressive behavior. This is also in almost all instances documented by the psychiatrist in the psychiatric evaluation presented to me. The work I do focuses on money management,anger management and career counseling. Family members such as siblings,parents,grandparents and other members of the household living with the young adult are part of the process of therapy. Referrals are presented to me from public mental health facilities usually by the social worker and psychiatrist. Transitional issues such as moving from an adolescent public mental health unit to an adult public mental health unit, money management power struggles between representative payee and beneficiary and career counseling concerns of adolescents and young adults have been topics of concern presented to me as during the initial interview. My average length of therapy with the consumer and family is eighteen months. Sessions are usually held weekly and in some instances every other week depending upon the level of commitment of the young person. Payment for services is usually made directly by the young adult through the representative payee issuing the check from the beneficary's account.
