All the training and techniques in the world cannot replace the necessary ingredient for any change/growth...trust. All of us struggle with close relationships in which "to be yourself" comes at a risk of criticism, judgement,or rejection. Who you are often becomes lost in an effort to please and be accepted by others. In therapy, the trust built with a therapist allows you to re-discover who you are and safely explore what you want to be. Most times, symptoms and problems (individual and relational) subside when I help clients recognize and strengthen what already exists in themselves.
